Reilly the Hostess promptly seated me Al fresco at 8 pm, where I was greeted by my server Pete who was attentive but not hovering. The patio was busy for a Tuesday night and the menu was creative and extensive so I proceeded to order both the Oxtail Dumplings and the Singapore Chili Crab Cakes both of which were served hot...I only wish they had a full liquor license as no true cocktails were available...mis en place was delivered by Pete and I proceeded to order the Lamb Shank...steep prices but difficult to make and recreate at home...Chef Owner Andrew Kirschner really hit a home run
Beautiful pairing of flavors in all dishes. Great service. We sat outside in the patio. Inside was too loud. I'll be back!
Wow I don't even know where to start about this place. Exceptional flavors and quality ingredients used you can tell in each bite and what a vibe and fun ambiance. A bit pricey, but a great date night restaurant. Food was great. Service was also wonderful. Will definitely go back for a special occasion in the future. Great place in Santa Monica
Wow! This is a gem in Santa Monica. The food was incredible, my friend, and I had the bone marrow, the oxtail dumplings, and we each had the hanger steak because it was so delicious. I appreciate how attentive the service was, and everybody was super friendly. The interior was gorgeous. Cozy, comforting, and also very modern. I loved the real candles, the fake tea, on each table. Little touches everywhere really stood out. I wish the bone marrow came with more bread, but they were able to bring more out without any problems. The oxtail dumplings were incredibly delicious and delicate. That steak was possibly the best steak that I've ever had prepared and I've been to quite a few steakhouses. I can't wait to return and try more things off the menu.
Everything was delicious! Smallish restaurant with a cute back patio. We tried the fried cauliflower, eggplant, peach Burrata salad, lamb shank and cod. Best food we had in three days of dining out at some equally great places. Changed our plates out after our small dishes, nice to get fresh ones. Finished the meal with a yummy berry tart and ice cream.
Huge foodie. This is one of the best restaurants in LA. Food is unique AND delicious. Very consistent... I've been here numerous times. Anytime I want to impress someone I take them here and it NEVER fails! Amazing service. Amazing food. TAKE HER HERE!!!! Grilled Octopus Short rib dumplings (DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THIS) Whole Red Snapper Whipped Potatoes Stir fried Mushrooms Strawberry Crostada (DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THIS)
Love this restaurant! My favorite is the chicken liver mousse, absolutely the best. Love the honeycomb. Vegetables were the trumpet mushrooms, eggplant ( a little too oily), zucchini. Main entree was the cod with the lemon risotto. The sticky toffee pudding was perfect - not too sweet. Service -excellent. I highly recommend and can't wait to return to try other entrees.
Stumbled upon this gem while looking for dinner places nearby our hotel. Out of our 6 dishes, the hanger steak was most mediocre, but we cleaned every single plate. We ordered: - chicken liver mousse (the honeycomb was the star of the show) - oyster skewer - Singaporean chili crab cake (the flavor is SOOO close to how the Singaporeans make 'em!) - Meyer lemon gnocchi - hanger steak - sugar snap peas - strawberry crostata Recommend to get reservation ahead of time because this restaurants gets filled up quickly and there will be a wait.
My dining experience at Tar and Roses in Santa Monica was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we stepped in, the ambience captivated us, setting the stage for an amazing evening. Our waiter, Jonah, deserves special commendation for his impeccable service. He effortlessly set the vibe as soon as we were seated, guiding us through the menu with expertise and genuine enthusiasm. For starters, we indulged in the oxtail dumplings, balsamic glazed ribs, and Brussels sprouts, each dish bursting with flavor and expertly crafted. The perfect balance of textures and flavors left us eagerly anticipating the main course. I opted for the Hanger steak, accompanied by kale and a delectable potato and bacon gratin. Every bite was filled with savory goodness. My husband savored the Duck breast, beautifully paired with parsnip, swiss chard, and dried cherry chutney, topped with hazelnut for a touch of nuttiness. The attention to detail in every dish, coupled with the warm and inviting atmosphere, made our dining experience truly memorable. If you're in Santa Monica and craving an unforgettable culinary experience, Tar and Roses is an absolute must-visit. We'll definitely be back for more.
